The last regular long distance contract was the Jam 'Ole job - a weekly coaling run of 246 miles and 194 locks between the Warwickshire coalfields and Kearley & Tonge's jam factory in Southall, London. That job finished in October 1970, marking the end of a lifestyle over two centuries old. Thanks to organiser Tim Coghlan, this second re-enactment of the Jam 'Ole job has given working and pleasure boating crews alike a chance to relive this vanished life and culture. Every Easter the Canal Carrier spends a fortnight delivering coal on the Thames ring. This is the fourth and final film about an Easter coal delivery trip, and this video covers the return home on the Grand Union Canal to Stoke Bruerne. It starts off well with the coal delivered, the crew investigate side ponds, compare their skills at thumblining. There are also more gems from David's vast store of anecdotes. Then come the ferocious storms, the Grand Union is turned into a vast lake and the crew are left fighting to bring the boats home safely.

The canals have never been more popular, but David Blagrove, a coal merchant operating a fleet of historic working narrowboats based at Stoke Bruerne, introduces us to the canal and to canal life as the pleasure visitors could never see it. We see David and friends at a fabulous music evening in a traditional canalside pub. We see him train three boaters to handle a loaded motor boat and butty. David presents a unique and unmissable tale for canal lovers everywhere.

Video - The Long Haul Ref: 344
This video follows the 110 mile journey from Oxford to Worcester with an unpowered butty. Members of the Cotswold Canals Trust and the Narrow Boat Trust Ltd combined to organise this trip, and take the place of the horse. Stuck in the mud, caught up in trees, drenched by rain, all the trials and tribulations of the trip are covered.
